Just read an interesting article on Xi, how his popularity and perception as the strongman has been diminished by the Covid debacle and economic woes. Reportedly, he's been searching for a way to prop up his reputation. Taiwan would be a risky gambit (for everyone) but then authoritarians are not known for their rationality when their political grip begins to weaken.

Putin is a prime example, particularly if the rumors of his fading health are accurate.

Yes, we need to be prepared for a worst-case scenario.
