I have long walks, then I can’t remember why or where I was going to or on the long walks for. I have long talks with myself, and all the other voices tell me to shut the f**k up. So much lolly to get to, so little gagging time to do it in!

Thanks, a good article. The right is becoming Ultra Maga as they put it. I saw a comment today where some guy wanted to take all the illegals and Democrats and send them out of the country. I let him have it! I can't stand down to that crap! I've never witnessed anything like this in all my 68 years. Never remain silent. In Nazi Germany the dug huge death pits as mass graves. They literally walked to their death by shooting from deranged individuals. *Warning graphic imagery - https://www.yadvashem.org/articles/general/epicenter-horror-photographs-sonderkommando.html

Bad news all around here. Aileen Cannon just dismissed the classified documents case based upon what Clarence Thomas signaled her during the immunity decision - the special counsel's appointment was "unconstitutional" due to the fact the Jack Smith was never approved by congress for a role in the Department of Justice. Enjoy your time away from our mess, Ruth.

Ollie Parks's avatar

I am hoping that Aileen Cannon's toadying will backfire when her ruling is not only reversed on appeal but her disregard of clear precedent gets her kicked off the case.

Susan Stone's avatar

I'd rather see her no longer allowed to be a judge, since she apparently has no interest in dispensing justice.

Dana Bennett's avatar

Kevin, you’re making it sound like Jack Smith’s appt as special counsel has ALREADY been deemed “unconstitutional”. IF that were true, you’d be hearing MASSES of people protesting that. The DAMN corrupt Supremes didn’t get their dirty hands on that question. Even Merrick Lazy Garland would fight THAT. Get your facts straight - FIRST!

Kevin's avatar

I didn't say that. I just reported Cannon's rationale for her decision and Thomas's signaling that same thinking in his concurrence in the immunity decision. It will likely be appealed up to SCOTUS eventually and we will see what happens then.

Dana Bennett's avatar

Well it’s just a huge mess made by some very sloppy and not-so-smart but CONNIVING people - Cannon, Thomas

I’d be a premium member if I could, Ruth! I’m just grateful you offer a very low price, $2.50. I experienced medical

Bankruptcy after a long illness ending in organ transplant. This type of experience should NOT be the fate of any American. But it’s the most common form of bankruptcy now. How did we get here? Same way we still have such a low basic hourly wage, $7.25. The Europeans just shake their heads at us. The rest of the civilized world has raised its standards for their populations. I’m not moving, though. UNLESS Trump wins the presidency again. Thanks for ALL your academic integrity, and sharing of information.

Dana, thank you for sharing. The situation you described is all too common. We need new leadership in the DemParty one that addresses the needs of all, as through SinglePayer Medicare for All (M4A.) While Biden/Harris failed to support such a program the Trump Republicans have been eager to do away with Medicare and Medicaid.

It is imperative that we defeat the GOP by a large margin; to retain what we have and move towards a more equitable society were we all, rather than just the few, have what we need. To accomplish this, we need Biden to pass the baton on to Harris so that we may win a gov’t for all rather than for the privileged few.

Dana Bennett's avatar

Robert, I’m not so sure about your “solution.” In fact, disagree. AND Kamala isn’t going anywhere. And I’m not ready to ditch Joe Biden. I’m applying for Medicaid now. But that’s not easy either. I was turned down once, after a year working with these people, when they told me I was “too old.” How’s does THAT happen? I stopped fighting BUT should have written to my governor(Colorado) all my govt reps. But I was worn OUT!!!

As to TFG: a victim of his own rhetoric.

We do not ‘obey in advance’ to silence ourselves. Legitimate criticism is appropriate. The effort to silence is also part of Project 2025.

Sara McLarty's avatar

"The effort to silence us" ??? It seems President Biden's team is silencing itself.

Peter V's avatar

Not sure what you are talking about Sarah?

Peter V Talking about the Biden campaign cancelling ad runs and appearances in Texas, one scheduled for the LBJ library Thursday the 18th. And VP Harris' trip to Florida this week in the plan to support abortion care. Maybe it's only a pause and i worried too soon.

Full disclosure - I am in state leadership for Moms Demand Action here in NJ, so I am well-versed in the topic of gun violence. All I want to say on that topic is that you please ask yourself how often the topic of the American GV epidemic has been brought up since the events of Saturday. Little children are being killed on our streets every single day - and the daily toll is well over 110 people PER DAY in America. The president expressed his outrage at the press conference last week. We should be outraged too. Every single day.

I'm using all this as more inspiration to do the work. To wit:

What I did over the weekend:

Requested & started writing postcards targeting infrequent voters of color in Milwaukee.

Requested 200 more Postcards to Swing States - have already completed 300 to NC & 200 to FL. This batch I requested whatever is most needed.

Signed up for more weekly shifts with VoteRiders volunteer helpline to help voters get ID & registered to vote.

Wrote 10 letters to voters in AZ with VoteRiders.

Eyes on the prize, people. The courts were never going to save us - we are the ones we have been waiting for - WE ARE THE CHANGE WE SEEK.

Do the work. This too shall pass, and we owe it to future generations not only to not freak out, but to DOUBLE DOWN and more. Let's go.

UPDATE 6:30 pm - If you would like to join Moms Demand Action, the largest gun safety movement in the U.S., please text JOIN to 644-33. I hope this community will get to hear someone from the gun safety movement at some point. It's the guns.

Lisa - thank you for your words and deeds. In his substack today, Robert Hubbell makes the fervent request to each subscriber and reader to make gun safety the #1 voting issue in the U.S. He also mentions Moms Demand Action, Students Demand Action, and Everytown as organizations for people to join, donate to, or volunteer with.

Lisa Iannucci's avatar

Thank you, that was a wonderful essay and right on point. I am going to edit my post to include info on how to join Moms Demand Action. :)

Chiding Dems for raising the alarm about Trump is like issuing a noise citation to the person who shouted "fire" when building was ablaze and apologizing to the arsonist for having arrested him.

How nice. Sorry your vacation is interrupted. My daughter is also vacationing in lovely Italy. She was in Rome and is now near Naples. She was at Pompeii today, but yesterday was a beach day. I am not even discussing the goings on with her so that she can enjoy her vacation. However, she knows about Fascists and resistance since she studied the Nazi party under Hitler and their rise and fall. I am reading your book and Project 2025 at the same time, so I find your work deepens my understanding of current events and how to interpret the current situation in terms of the reaction of the Republican party. I know their MAGAs don't see the hypocrisy, but I hope others do. Also, these sorts of shootings are explained in a different way in Prof. Kathleen Belew's book Bring the War Home: The White Power Movement and Paramilitary America. Ironically right before the shooting my friend and I had been discussing German gun laws because they happened to be a topic of Deutsche Welle the day before. I am hoping that once the dust settles people can get back to talking about gun laws. My feelings are as I feel about shootings in general. We need to do something about them, and those things are laid out for us to follow but some are blocking them. So, I am trying to turn myself back to reading Project 2025, and continue discussing it with my discussion group in terms of what we can use to get to the public and which groups will care about which things. We would like a one pager for different constituencies. DNC please point us in the right direction with the demographics. My 19-year-old daughter has told me, no one her age is watching the debates (obviously she is over generalizing), and not reading mainstream press or Substacks. They are on Tiktok, Instagram, Telegram, and What's App. She is also on Signal, since that is what our family uses to communicate. All nieces and nephews (ages 20-27) are also going to vote for Biden. I don't believe for their demographic there is a "scintillating candidate," so whomever that is for, I am not sure? The people who did not vote because they were undecided. Well, no guarantee that they won't still be undecided if there is a switch, which would be a pie in the face to all the people who did vote and have and are working hard for Biden. United we stand!
