The subtly of some authoritarians. Wow. In your book, you write about how peripheral and unabashed the characters of the last century were…seemingly obvious to everyone except the citizenry. My mind pictured Ron DeSantis in a similar vain as Erdogan. DeSantis is intelligent and brazen but seems to have studied how to not be overtly malignant! Ali Dinçer, though exiled confirmed the confusing principled nature of Erdogan while he jails journalists and politicians who disagree.

Sounds like Erdogan is one of those tricky autocrats, not quite an absolute like Putin, but far from supporting democratic measures and covering up an ugly, repressive past from 100 years ago.

What an interesting interview. Another example of how it all comes down to money---e.g., why the EU won't stand up to Erdogan when he crosses the line. It's the same with how the EU caves to Putin and Orban, especially Germany. It's disheartening.
