That happened to me, so in the section I had left blank which was if you are not a paid subscriber what would it take... I put NA, and then it went through.
This upcoming Trump administration is very sad and pathetic. His voters will accept a president who is a felon, rapist, and illegal business man. Why doesn’t our country want more for themselves and their children? Why don’t these Trump supporters want more for themselves?
Our standards and ethics have dumped! It is going to have grave effect on our country and the World. Why are voters taking this path to the circus and its very rich clowns? Not going to be nice!
Substack has a bunch of interesting folks. Ruth, you're the only one I do a paid subscription for. Who can afford to pay for all these writers individually? How are we to reach masses of people, many or most of whom can't afford to pay writers individually. Isn't this a self-defeating model aimed at the elite and enriching Substack?
It is something I think about, Mark, it's not tenable in the long run. How to reach people now that so much is paywalled is the issue. I don't paywall my content other than the Q&As for that reason. We will have to go "other places" like You Tube to reach different audiences in the future.
I was paying about $700 a year for a single National newspaper subscription here in Canada. I cancel that subscription and spend roughly the same amount for about eight paid substacks. I follow about 30 more as a free subscriber. I feel like I'm getting way better value for money from sub stack than I did from the Globe and Mail. I also like that 85% of my money is going directly to the writer. In my experience, the majority of writers only paywall somewhere between 0%- 30% of their content. Short of being completely free this feels like a fairly good system to me. The only way I see us getting everything free is if we are smothered in ads, writers are paid abysmally, the government pays for everything or some combo of the above. None of that is out of the question but I don't think the current Incarnation is horrible. Definitely an improvement over Legacy Media in many areas!
Happy new year Ruth, thanks for all you do. I’m a huge fan of Wajahat Ali @thelefthook and also his podcast “democracy-ish” with Danielle Moodie - looking forward to the upcoming Q&A!
Thank you for your writing and scholarship on tyranny. I know Italy is your area of expertise, but I've always wondered how Oliver Cromwell fares in comparison with the Mussolini's, Hitlers, and Stalins of the 20th Century. I've lately been thinking about Churchill in the summer of 1940. I feel that we're in a similar position as Britain and Winston Churchill. His courage and defiance should be our example. Stay well, and have a Happy New Year.😃
It keeps telling me to sign in when I try and access the link. But I am already signed in… I’m not sure how to proceed with the survey from here, but definitely appreciate all you do!
Thanks for the survey, Ruth...I'm looking forward to our meeting this Sunday. We rely on you and each other as we brace for the continuing assault on democratic values and ready ourselves to respond.
For all who are interested in ACTIONS, there will be demonstrations in DC from January 3-5, just before the ritual of certifying the Electoral Votes. There is growing opposition to certifying, being directed at our Congressional representatives. We can support the demonstrators from home if we can't go to DC.

Ruth, have you read this article on 15 things Biden could do to preserve democracy? I'd love to hear your thoughts...at least someone is thinking concretely about this:
I am a paid subscriber but when I went to take the survey the "submit" button was not highlighted so I could not submit it. I don't know why.

okay but the survey should tell people to do that...thanks for letting us know.

It worked! Thank you!

I tried to do the survey, but it gives me your Substack archive and not the survey.(?)

Ruth, please have Waj back when he is feeling better. His perspective is top notch!
