AOC spoke at both the Munich Security Conference and then at the Technical University in Berlin to an audience of over 1000 students. What she said, is a master class in resistance. I wrote a piece about it and in it I have included a link to her talk.
I saw the master class of AOC and it blew me away. Everyone should listen to it more than once. She is an expert on political parties, ideology, organizing and democratic strategy.
I don't cry easily, but the first few paragraphs were all I could take. Netanyahu and Putin being invited onto American soil!! etc., etc. I will have a rest tonight and start again in the morning. How will our allies over the past 80 years ever trust us again? And what will this mean for our beloved children and grandchildren? All too tragic and sad. All I can think is that Trump must be defeated, come hell or high water.
I see that the US fascists are aligning with the fascists in Germany. Anna Paulina Luna is continually quoted as receiving members of the AfD. Marco Rubio went right to Hungary and Slovenia to shore up ties with Orban and Fico who are resisting the democratic supports of Ukraine from the rest of the EU. Merz wants to find a way around them. I think we are going to be seeing either new rules or a new configuration of the European countries in the EU who stand up to Trump and his wishes to reshape Europe in his image. As one politician put it. "Rubio said the US is a child of Europe, when does the child tell the parent what to do?"
I upgraded to paying subscriber this morning because I read this in my email and then read the New York Times Morning email from Sam Sifton regarding the Board of Peace with quotes such as this about it “a start-up meant to disrupt international statecraft. Trump has offered many out-of-the-box ideas, and some of them have succeeded. Will this one?”. The NYT open mind approach made me sick so I subscribed here.
And this about the members of the Board of Peace “ The recruits are an odd assortment — not all America’s traditional friends. They include Argentina, Hungary, Indonesia, Pakistan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates. Seven European nations, including France and Britain, have declined the offer. Trump rescinded Canada’s invitation after the prime minister criticized U.S. foreign policy. Russia said it would pony up if the United States thawed its bank accounts.” Odd assortment, indeed.
Sifton says many experts worry about the “worst case scenario” as if the NYT is willing to keep an open mind about Trump and his band of autocrats. I’m grateful for being able to read Ruth Ben-Ghiat and others who are keeping us informed, but it’s so sickening that MSM has to see “both sides.”

It's quite a disgusting situation when our media, in the name of free speech, feels obligated to give fascism equal time to be heard. It's dangerous not only because of fascism's history but also because fascism's core tenets are vices as opposed to democracy's virtues. Allowing fascist speech is what Germany wrestled with in the rise of Hitler. In the end, fascist speech was allowed, which resulted in the destruction of their nation. Our media has been going down this same suicidal path for ten years now. Freedom of speech is not absolute.
It's exasperating to me to read of all they ways the trump regime is signaling and setting course on White Christian Nationalism in the United States, all the while completely ignoring the fact 'we' did our best, historically, to annihilate the Native Americans.
To be a good leader you need both adaptability and affability, you gotta kinda get along because you are the one who comes from outside. Also, the willingness to not always get what you want, and to understand that others want to do things too.

Thank you for your incredible work. This column is very important for one striking reason: it highlights how demagogues obfuscate, manipulate, and use Knowledge and Truth.
The Founders Fathers wrote a declaration of "self-evident truths"; namely that all men are created equal, etc. Note that "Truth" here is not objective (i.e., provable) knowledge. Rather, the Declaration was a series of statements that articulated a proposed social fabric around which the country would be organized and run. Its purpose was to circulate that social fabric to the populace in order to create the desire and actions toward Revolution. So "Truth" is evoked by those seeking power in a contest with another power base (in this case, the British Empire). Once military victory was achieved, they set about writing Laws that sought (often massively hypocritically) to memorialize and maintain those truths. These Laws were used by a Justice system in which appointed officers would mediate disputes using provable evidence (e.g., Knowledge) to determine outcomes.
Enter Trump. He too started with his own declaration of "truths" around which a new social fabric would be organized and run. Namely, that white people settled and expanded the country; that because of their--obtw, god-given--success, they earned an eternal Manifest Destiny Card which allowed them full leeway to do as they please; which of course includes refusal of Citizen (i.e., Caste) Club access to non-whites (especially former Presidents), and the right to treat non-white men as partial citizens who should be under constant surveillance, suspicion and who should have even those partial rights further marginalized. Its purpose was to circulate (via both traditional and emerging communication networks) that social fabric to the populace to create the desire and actions to win elections on the way to permanent, corrupt patriarchy.
Please note that it is immaterial that Trump was aided and abetted by billionaire monopolists who funded and are profiting with him in this new "regime of truth." Democrats certainly had the donors to financially compete--but they chose to fight on the tiny, contested, and ultimately inconclusive postage stamp of Knowledge (i.e., "Trump's a liar!") and not across the galaxy of Truth. Trump's followers were swooning with delight over the Brave New World he promised. Time after time they said "we don't care what he says (factual or not statements); we know what he means (permanent minority rule)." As a result, Law leavened with Knowledge is obsolete. It will simply be what our Leader says it is.
Once elected, Trump and his adherents simply began dismantling the state and installing The Taking of What's Always Been Rightfully Ours. And OF COURSE that means treating any and every issue through their Truth-filter. That is, not as a law or (God forbid) a fact--but as to whether it fits into the new social fabric. Denying slavery existed is OF COURSE part of the new social fabric; going after critics or whistleblowers is OF COURSE necessary in the new police state; continuing territorial expansion is OF COURSE how we got to be great in the first place; sending brownshirts to terrorize and remove non-whites is OF COURSE how we're protecting ourselves. Weren't you paying attention???

Resistance to evil is hard and slow-moving. Formulating and circulating a better social fabric is also difficult--but has a far better chance of displacing the current one. We must develop that Truth fully, 250 years removed from the last (good) one. It has to speak to a shared fate based on empathy, the pursuit of happiness, suffocating wealth inequality, climate, and the new digital age in which we find ourselves. There are 100s of millions of men--and especially women and children--who are desperate to hear such a Truth that will make their lives better.
Fascism always creates its own truth, based on its conscienceless leader. Delusional sociopaths like tRump have their own reality that is created solely to coincide with their grandiose self image. People that idolize him, absorb his distorted reality and truth, creating collective delusion and post-truth. Their thinking now mimics that of a lunatic.

I am literally sick at the thought that the courts may allow the arrest of every refugee who has been in the USA for a year but has not yet received their Green Card. As someone who has been volunteering to assist refugees from three wars to be safe in their new country, I know these folks are simultaneously the most vulnerable and the most vetted immigrants in this country. I housed 1. A man who was attacked with chemicals that left him nearly blind; 2. a man who was imprisoned for being the “wrong” religion - beaten, and subjected to sham executions (twenty years later he still has PTSD); 3. A family who were hidden in a basement, listening to the missiles exploding and watching their young child become listless, gray and silent; and 4. A family who lost their father to murder by a government militia - who then set the mother on fire. Refugees are survivors of horrors we can hardly imagine and yet are not only the strongest people I know, but also the most loyal citizens. I can’t stand watching this. I feel like we should all be “hiding Jews in the attic” - whatever their faith. Sadly, I don’t have an attic!
The so-called "fixes" proposed for Viktor Orban's Hungary are more likely fixes to the U.S. election system (nationalizing elections, controlling eligibility, control of electoral outcomes), to be an echo of Hungary's: engineered to provide legitimacy to Orban's indefinite rule, providing a model for an indefinite fascist Republican rule here. It was opposition parties who unwittingly provided legitimacy to Orban's victory within the framework of a rigged system. The U.S. may be facing the same situation in 2028, if the Republican radical election tinkering initiatives prove successful. Permanent disempowering of political opposition is a real possibility.
