Donald Trump is, and has always been, a complete fraud and self-deluded, malignantly narcissistic psychopath. As his visible mental and physical health accelerate their deterioration, he is increasing his irrational lashing out and projection amidst a suicidal recklessness in speech and behavior. He is clearly not long for this world. The question is, "Are we as well for failing to stop him in time?"

Linda Weide's avatar

Great question. I would like to have my child and other people's children live in a better world than the one we have with Trump as our president.

Leigh Horne's avatar

You ask a very good question, which deserves serious consideration. He could in fact, lead us over the brink in any number of ways, including depriving many of us of healthcare, including emergency room care, depriving us of food both here, via SNAP cancellation, and abroad where children are already dying of acute malnutrition after USAID was cancelled, by depriving frail elders of long term care facilities, by depriving us of living wages by fighting to keep Union membership down, by dropping big fat bombs on a country that now has even more motivation to rise from the wreckage by making a nuclear strike somewhere, and maybe sooner than later, by loosening restrictions on the pollution of our waters and the air we breathe, by refusing to ban assault weapons. I could go on. So, what to do? In the short run we need to visibly display our displeasure, whenever and however we can. We need to pressure Congress with calls and letters, we need to picket the SCOTUS, we need to elect good representatives to our School Boards, our local government, our state and federal government. We need to speak truth to power and make all the noise we can. Boycott corporate supporters, elevate our satire and other stinging criticisms of the Orange T**d, boost the ratings of shows, podcasts and substacks that tell the truth and make even sharper jokes about him. AND DO IT ALL NOW.

All good, practical suggestions for rationally opposing the Trump madness and protecting our humanity and goodness from his unregenerate evil. But we should focus as well on understanding and deploying a panoply -- or arsenal -- of strategic nonviolent weapons of war against Trump MAGA fascism, a phenomenon lamentably undergirded and sustained by a pandemic of mental pathology. America's most eminent psychiatrists, led by social and forensic psychiatrist and violence expert Dr. Bandy X. Lee and her organization the World Mental Health Coalition, have called this pernicious and perilous social and political malady the pandemic of Trump shared psychosis, a viral-like mental health contagion transmitted by an untreatable and incurable malignant narcissist, the most dangerous kind of mentally disordered individual on the planet.

Strategic nonviolent action has, over the past 50 years, succeeded in challenging and toppling dictators all over the world, in Eastern Europe, Egypt, Serbia, etc., and must be fully engaged in the US to cripple, thwart and remove the rule of Trump and his mental pathology, lest we commit national and likely global suicide.

Leigh Horne's avatar

You're preaching to the choir, my brother. I'm a retired psychotherapist, so I've been at some level sick to my stomach ever since enough other, much sicker and more desperate people, elected him POTUS. Yes, he is profoundly mentally ill, as every single mental health professional I've ever heard or read about agrees. And it's not only that, unfortunately. Shady, greedy, and relentless corporatists have degraded our food supply, in some cases poisoned our air and water (read up on the many serial killers who started emerging from the woods in the Pacific Northwest during the years when in Tacoma, aluminum smelters were emitting dangerous levels of brain-toxic chemicals), poisoned our minds with layers upon layers of ads and celebrity nonsense that weakened our innate sense of right and wrong, etc. ad infinitum. So we can observe without exaggeration that this is in some sense a fight to the death against the agents of death--those who would sacrifice our mental and physical wellbeing on the altar of their greed for an endless supply of narcissistic goodies to stroke their bloated, outrageous egos.

Of course, I thoroughly concur, as I suggested in my comment. It is the unique and extreme nature of Trump's personality and its disorder and deformation, having become omnipresent and relentless in its assertion, that has allowed it to become highly infectious, spreading not only to vulnerable and gullible believer MAGA types but also to those who consider their rapacious self-interest to be rational. Lamentably, their mental pathology is closer to his than they wold ever believe or admit.

Leigh Horne's avatar

It seems to me that Trump is an absolute poster boy for many of the collective 'sins' of this country: he is immature, psychologically and to some degree neurologically impaired, poorly educated, uber-materialistc, has a short fuse and shorter attention span, is exceptionally impulsive, an icon of 'toxic' rather than ennobling masculinity, fat, fake, facile and febrile. Chaos Man could be his Marvel identity. Having got that out of my system, I noticed that you mention Trump's personality disorder as in some sense infectious. And it is, if by this you mean it can be passed on to others. So can many human qualities, which is why we are in some sense products of both our nature (DNA) and our nurture, or the effects of the people in our lives. Fred Trump was famously a creep and a Nazi, Mary Sr a manipulable naif from the Outer Hebrides, in addition to suffering from various maladies severe enough to remove her from her kids for extended periods of time. Wee Donnie was probably doomed from the get go. Which doesn't mean we don't have to 'lock him up' or neutralize him in some lesser manner.

Kosmos's avatar

Agreed. Most features of individual human character, nations’ socio-cultural ethos and the human condition writ large evince some variable admixture of nature and nurture. But mass psychosis easily transforms even the better angels of our nature into their evil opposite of darker angels under devious and masterful rhetorical suasion and fear nurtured by a primo-psychopathic malignant narcissist capable of duping the gullible into extreme identification with a cult leader. Moral depravity and human psychopathy are often symbiotic.

Fred tRump was a sociopath, which reminds me that there is some genetic origin of sociopathy and a possible input to Donald's ASPD.

Mary Trump spoke about Donald being left alone much of the time in his younger years, suggesting to me that he has attachment disorder. Add to this, Machiavellianism and sadism, and we have a man capable of being a planet killer.

A very good question to which I add, will Vance be as bad or worse?

Sharon Herrick's avatar

This is a haunting question. It seems likely that Trump is more dangerous in the short term (well, I suppose he only HAS a short term, but still). I think he is so unpredictable and unstable that he could well start a nuclear war (you know, to prove he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize), but Vance is calculated, hateful and perhaps more cunning and driven by white male supremacist ideology. Trump appears to command a following that will do anything for him but that will probably not feel the same about Vance. Vance is probably smart enough to know the tariff rigamarole is damaging to their cause. I think the negative effects of the tariffs may be the only thing that changes some voters' minds. (I'm still hoping the voters have minds.) Sorry to drone on---and not really answer your question.

A complete fraud, yes, and becoming more transparently so every day. But his malignant intent is the real thing.

Hi Ruth,

Even though the day to day of 47 & his regime is horrible & difficult to accept (Resist!), everything you are discussing is very interesting. It sounds like he is escalating in his delusions of grandeur. And his bombings of Iran seem reckless.

I listen to his speech. Slurred at times. His thoughts expressed—tangentiality.

Or as he refers to it as “the weave”. He doesn’t seem competent, cognitively. I’m wondering who puts forth his EO’s. There must be cautious balancing of words in his presence (by his aids & cabinet) in the WH.

Sharon Senkiew's avatar

The people behind Project 2025 write the EO’s.

This is an excellent article. No dispute with your analysis nor with that of Mary Trump. While we still have access to libraries to search, can someone provide a compendium of how the autocrats and dictators you have described have been taken down? Are there historical alternatives to brute force (military coups, civil war, revolution?) What tools have been taken up by patriots of the past? The people of Israel have been in the streets for years protesting Netanyahu's corrupt and facist leadership. The people of Iran protested the reign of the Ayatollah Khamenei for decades until it became unsafe to even speak up. What works?

Linda Weide's avatar

Prof. Ben-Ghiat discusses the end of these regimes in her book Strongmen.

If you like, you can watch, "Pray the Devil Back to Hell," about the Liberian women who took down the brutal dictator, Charles Taylor, and "Bringing Down a Dictator" about how a non-violent campaign eventually took down Milosevic in Yugoslavia. I would love for Ruth to devote a session or two to how we might organize to take down this vile regime, by learning from other countries who've successfully accomplished this. We have goons with guns violently kidnapping American citizens off the streets and sending them to torture prisons with no due process...we can't stand idly by. praythedevilbacktohell.com bringingdownadictator.com

Great resources. Thank you. And I second your suggestion about such a Lucid session.

The absolute absurdity of Trump desire to rule as a king is only matched by his insatiable greed and self-centered hunger to be both adored and feared.

He is a pathetic small man behind a velvet curtain. I hope that we will be able to live past his tyranny—and restore our democracy.

Ralph Nader had nuclear weapons expert, Theodore Postol, on his front end podcast, and reported on very interesting technological facts that demonstrate the disinformation Trump alluded to right after the US dropped bombs on Saturday night (6/21/25)…

Listen on Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ralph-nader-radio-hour/id874581610?i=1000714937357

In the aftermath of the U.S. bombing of Iranian nuclear facilities, we welcome back Theodore Postol, Professor of Science, Technology and National Security Policy Emeritus at MIT to give his expert technical assessment on where that assault leaves the Iranian nuclear program.

His expertise is in nuclear weapon systems, including submarine warfare, applications of nuclear weapons, ballistic missile defense, and ballistic missiles more generally. No one at that point after the attack could have known whether or not there was success of any kind, even if there was success. And I doubt there was any success. Theodore Postol The Israelis have done everything in their power to create an internal argument among the political leadership in Iran to proceed to build a nuclear weapon so that this kind of thing won't happen again. So the Israeli grand strategy, if you want to call it that, shows no intelligence or thought of any kind.

Please, please, please!

SOMEBODY!!!

Buy an old trophy, spray paint the thing yellow but say it is gold. Put a plaque on the thing that says something like "Bigliest Ever Nobel Peace Prize Ever, Ever, Ever!"

Let the Leavitt girl give the thing to .... "you know who"..... and done!

Then "you know who" can go back to cheating at golf and taking healthcare away from everybody who has not got a $+100M wallet.

I think we all "get" this. I think it's time that those with perspective and insight get off this dime and help lead the fight back. We all have our communities of trust and power to influence those who have turned but don't quite know the next step. We cannot allow the budget bill to pass, we must mobilize local police to protect our communities from ICE thugs, we must assure that everyone knows exactly what they're about to lose if any further steps from this White House succeed. Retake our guardrails in the rule of law, end this fascist presidency, and incarcerate its perpetrators.

Pamela Tanton's avatar

My sense is that in constantly producing insight and context for what is going on every week, and in some cases every day, these people like Ruth, Heather Cox Richardson, Mary Trump, Joyce Vance, etc., actually ARE helping us lead the fight back. They keep us together, they keep us informed, they fire us up. There are a lot of politicians and others who are doing things to fight back. I do agree that now is a good time to talk about what’s next, beyond flooding the streets. Seems like massive strikes could be the next thing, from what I’ve read and heard. Shutting it down.

“Despite being depraved and cruel, much like his cohort Benjamin Netanyahu, he is driven by the most primitive impulses that center almost solely around protecting his fragile ego from humiliation (about which he has a pathological terror) and himself from the reality that he is a complete fraud.”

Operative word: FRAUD! Not to mention, he and MAGA are as ruthless, as they are relentless, as well as being overly sadistic and morally bankrupt.

In addition, Trump is extremely impulsive and reckless, which makes him very, very dangerous!

Furthermore, Trump claimed this morning that he isn’t negotiating any deals with Iran because he obliterated their entire nuclear program. Again, his delusions of grandeur will allow Iran to ge the bomb because he is in denial, which makes him a clear and present danger to the National Security of the United States; he can never be wrong! IMHO…:)

That picture of March 20 2025 with "lobbyists" from this or that religion placing their hands on the twice impeached one if shocking.

And then there are people who dare to challenge me for being free of religion.

Everyday’s first thoughts anymore are how the heck did the United States of America become so toxically filled with rhetoric about how to put down ethnic groups of people, including those seeking asylum in a ‘free’ country and brutality arrested at the hands of masked bullies with no identification tags…similar to the brown shirted thugs of Hitler who did exactly this. It is scary and what is worse than scary is the way our government is falling apart into fascism and greed.

The maga republicans that back the orange genius need to breakup with this madman, but the money jingling in their pockets, and also of the supremes, just sounds too good to let go of, so they continue onward in their fake crusade to make us somehow great again, when in REALITY

we are all tremendously weakened by this fascist monster. What to do besides praying is to protest against it all, and use the tools we have assembled so far to fight back. Lucid by Ruth Ben-Ghiat is an excellent place to be and her writings are superbly written with resources aplenty.

Read and write. Plan on being able to stand your ground and don’t give up your FREEDOM.

So? What is the poison holding together Trump's attack on America? And, it's not just Trump's attack., The whole of the GOP IS complicit in attacking America. The poisonous weapons they bring are hatred, racism, intolerance, fear and greed. Collectively, America is the wealthiest country in human history. But rather than continuing to build a better society, Trump and the GOP want to burn down our humane social programs, disrupt the best work of our educational institutions, cripple our healthcare system, deport as inhumanly as possible, hard working immigrants and attack our most vulnerable Americans. They manufacture hatred to gaslight Liberal America. Everyday Trump finds new hateful ways to attack America and Americans. The GOP goose steps right behind him. Why? They hate Liberals. Liberals are their enemy. Liberals want to help the poor and the needy.. Liberals believe in equality. Liberals respect citizens who are not like them. The GOP hates kindness and will use government policy to stop it. At the end of the day, Trump and his GOP, in their greed, want to take the government funds for the poor and give it back to the rich in the form of tax cuts even if it swells our deficit We will defeat Trump's hatred and greed. We are rising up to return America to it's rightful mission of tolerance and equality. We will bring the sun out again
