Since those in power refuse to oust Trump, those of us who are mere citizens will have to find a way.

Let us hear more about "new and generative alliances". Accomplishing this seems paramount.

We need our own Aventine event, but republicans overall are complicit. Therefore every blue and purple state needs to follow Gavin Newsome’s lead!

The country is already a place that Mussolini would feel comfortable in. A political party in control that is totally willing and able to kidnap and deport American citizens. A party that is willing to eliminate any kind of opposition to a self-described dictator. A party that has worked for years to diminish women rights. A party that has been so fully racist that they are now trying to completely erase their black citizens. We also have a corrupt judicial system that is almost completely part of the MAGA crime family. We have a media owned and controlled by billionaires who have no interest in informing, their only interest is how to increase their profitability by not pressing too hard on a repressive and unlawful government. 77 million people voted in the election, and now we are living in a country that any given fascist would be proud to live in. We need opposition that is real, not talking but doing. Democrats should walk out, and blue states should talk secession, and millions of people with moral courage should be galvanized to support them.

I sure hope it doesn’t come to that, but here we (as citizens) are without options that will turn this around.

Others talk of a national strike, but I just don’t know anymore.

Our Power Elites have long wanted fascism here as a means to stop any leftist actions. Our CIA activity reflected the needs of our business titans, whether it was the United Fruit company in Guatemala or AT&T's need to have a government in Chile that would serve their needs. Fascism was installed in Guatemala and quasi-fascism was installed in Chile. Our elites wanted fascism here as well. It seems that most of our business titans could care less about democracy and is the main reason why tRump had so much billionaire support.

Thank you for this important and quite informative history lesson.

Your link to the declaration of no confidence in the government is broken. This one should work: https://apps.docusign.com/webforms/us/e42c4147e7e4637f395ade9b2e5a87e8?r=1

Nope. This is a this goes to a doc you sign that starts right off towards signing. It doesn’t show you the document. I’m not signing a document I can’t read first.

tRump could easily feel the legal heat that Mussolini did, and feeling trapped, lash out and declare a dictatorship. We need to remove this lunatic before we get to the point where we can no longer get rid of him.

Once the majority of our SCOTUS lost their moral code, they put the nation on a dangerous path. They allowed him to run for POTUS, even though the 14th Amendment clearly stated that he cannot. Fascism is based on a lack of conscience and sociopathic malevolence of its leader.

Frau Katze's avatar

Doesn’t seem like much legal heat is coming for Trump. SCOTUS is pathetic, with the majority clearly favouring him.

Keeping the memory of resistance alive…I just mailed a check to the TEXAS DEMOCRATS. Thank you to the person who shared the TEXAS website. Thank you, Ruth for the provocative Aventine history.

Ruth, thank you so much tor taking the time to write this important essay. I never knew before about the early history of the fascist regime in Italy under Mussolini. Your guest this morning, Tim Weiner, left me feeling quite hopeless. You always make me feel less hopeless and surrounded by others in this fight for our country. Thanks again!

Thank you for this important history lesson Ms. Ben-Ghiat.

The "Aventine Secession" was a fact not known to me.

And again, history does not repeat itself.... but history sure knows how to rhyme....

A little side thought, a point of which I'm 100% sure you are aware.

During these "early" Mussolini years there was a certain Austrian corporal who was looking south and learning how he could prevail. I'm sure he learned a lot from the "mistakes" Mussolini made in the twenties.

Marta Bizarra's avatar

And Stephen Miller learned from that same corporal. Utterly disgusting that this is happening here and we didn’t learn a goddamn thing.

Question for you and maybe for Tim Weiner: is dismantling the security apparatus of a country something autocrats typically do or is it unique to Trump?

Thanks.

Do you think it striking how poorly Trump did during his first term with the intelligence community when it came to matters their realm that pertained to Russia, and now in his second term again with the intelligence community and military brass on account of DEI issues, but also incompatibility and competence (his lack thereof and preference for the likes of Hegseth and Gabbard? Throw in Patel as part of the intelligence component.

Nothing to say about Trump's effective rescinding of DC Home Rule, taking over DC police, and mobilization of the DC National (which last happened on 1/6/21 in face of the failed coup attempt), and this plus the call up of National Guard troops from MS, SC, and OH? I'm surprised I haven't seen you write about this Prof B-G. Did I miss it? This "unprovoked" and unwarranted show of military force seems to me a quintessential fascist display, especially as it is more show than reality. (What reality was served?) And Trump has promised to not only stop the runawat crime wave that has DC in its grip (he imagines), but maybe he'll move on to Chicago next! Plus, he's going to marry it all with a beautification campaign.

Shouldn’t we start by finding a charismatic leader for the dems?

Vey important history lesson. Thank you. As a Texan whose city has a lot to lose when we lose our good represetative, I was happy to support the democrats who left the state, and will continue to support them as I can.
