Most images I post on Fridays are nature scenes, to add a note of calm. Today I am thinking of all of the displaced Ukrainians and other refugees who live in constant upheaval and danger. So, in keeping with this week’s essay and interview, I am featuring a few newer designs for refugee housing. Unfortunately, climate change and political turmoil will create millions of displaced people in the next decades, and this is a growth area.

The flatpack Better Shelter by IKEA, winner of the 2017 Beazley Design of the Year, looks very utilitarian but is solar-powered and can be assembled in a few hours. It has been used over 65 million times around the world. See this roundup of other innovative designs for shelters.
