The public should believe women. Men just lie and lie and lie. They are sick people with no morals. It is never enough for them; money, power, greed, demeaning people that get in their way, making false claims. They must be held accountable for their wrongdoing!

Lauren's avatar

Men should be held accountable. But men can be raped too. I can't help but wonder if epstein/orange/the others were raped at a young age.

Rosemary Silva's avatar

Not all victimizers were previously victimized. Many of them have a personality disorder (such as sociopathy), and some offenders claim they were victimized at some point in their life to dodge accountability for their crimes.

Armand Beede's avatar

LSW: I don't know how wide you mean this broad swipe.

First of all: I almost always believe the woman or the girl.

But the comment, "Men . . . are sick people with no morals . . ." is rather inclusive.

I presume you meant men who commit these offenses.

Admittedly, there are enough of those.

But, yes, I almost ALWAYS believe the woman or the girl.

Mother Nature made natural love -- whether husband and wife or LGBTQ+ -- that the worst crime is to terrorize or traumatize another by stripping her/him in that person's vulnerability for a sexual crime. That is one of the very worst of traumas.

Spousal abuse and child abuse are right up there, too.

The victims must be protected, cost it what it may.

Susan Stone's avatar

I agree with you Armand, and would tell you that child abuse, especially sexual abuse takes a very long time to recover from - if you do the hard work involved. It never goes away on its own. I was sexually abused extensively as a child and it took about 40 years of therapy to get to where I could hear the truth and then work on dealing with it. Despite all the work I did, there are still things that will never go away. Protection is very important, but help in recovery is perhaps even more so. BTW, I agree with you that it's not all men. It is wrong to paint all men that way. And I am relatively certain that people who abuse others were themselves abused. Not sure about trump or Epstein, but it is telling (to me) that Epstein apparently "needed" sex 3 times a day.

Armand Beede's avatar

Susan Stone: First: Your narrative states hard truths, and, you express yourself in a way that shows deep humanity, heart, intellect, soul, and spirit.

You are a beautiful person.

I am very, very sorry you underwent the suffering.

One of the worst things, is children, whom Mother Nature made so beautiful, so innocent, so curious, so full of hope for the future, these beautiful children are very conscious of right and wrong, and they assume guilt themselves, though they ARE the Innocents.

I cannot tell you how agonizing it is to know, as one who loves kids -- six grandkids of my own, that any kid should suffer.

And part of the trauma for many is the inward-looking for fault. The repression.

And, my God, you state it so very well.

Thank you so much for sharing!

God bless you, Susan Stone!

Susan Stone's avatar

Thank you, Armand. It's obvious that you understand the problems. One thing I will say is that I believe I am a better person from having been through all the therapy, done all the work. I understand a lot of things now that I would not have, had I not had to do that work. So there an up side to having been abused. Not that I would wish it on anyone.

Victoria Brown's avatar

I still, at 76, have triggers.

Susan Stone's avatar

Ditto at 80. Child abuse has always been kept under wraps, and common opinion says the children lie, not the adults. Excuse me?!?! Even though Epstein is dead, I think the files need to be released. They might open some people's eyes.

Marycat2021's avatar

Susan, I think that people who sexually abuse children (or elderly in nursing homes or people in comas) cannot handle normal relationships and must seek gratification and a sense of power by preying upon the weak, the small and the young. I am so sorry about what you went through. You are very strong and I hope you find peace.

Susan Stone's avatar

Thank you, Marycat. I believe I have found peace. My goal in all the work I did was to find love, and age 63 I married a wonderful man, who obviously loves me. He knows my history and accepts it. There are always bumps of some sort on the road of life, but these days, they are things like medical issues.

LSW's avatar

Yes men you commit these crimes feel entitled to take whatever or whomever they want. They have been damaged at some point in their lives. I didn’t mean every man. I should have clarified my statement more. I am just angry at their greed

Armand Beede's avatar

LSW: All is good. I totally, in every sense, agree with what you said in the two comments.

Yes: BELIEVE the woman; BELIEVE the child.

I certainly do.

Each woman, each girl, each person is of infinite worth of dignity, life, love, safety, shelter, food, security.

LSW's avatar

Thank you for correcting me. I was so angry I just fired off that post hastily. I’ll be more thoughtful next time. Be well and stay safe.

Lauren's avatar

Professor, how many of these men had parents who were guilty of sexual exploitation? It wouldn't justify anything, but it would put it into an important lens.

Armand Beede's avatar

Lauren: Thank you for asking that.

Child victims suffer the worst, unerasable trauma.

I wish there were a cure for the perversion. Maybe my compassion is falsely placed, but I think some of these perverts would want a cure.

Even chemical castration does not work, from articles on studies I have seen.

The main thing is to guard children to keep them from harm.

This is one of the most evil, vile infliction of harm upon little, innocent, vulnerable kids, who must be protected at all costs.

Some Catholic Dioceses have sent the perverts to monasteries.

As a Catholic, I would much rather think of Monasteries as producing meditation and contemplation in the spirit of Juan dela Cruz and Teresa d'Avila.

Yuck.

It is a terrible, terrible, traumatic crime that inflicts lifelong post-traumatic suffering on children and must be stopped at all costs.

BA in psych with an emphasis in child and family studies...you don't want to know what I've heard.

Armand Beede's avatar

Lauren: Thank you. My beautiful wife, Nancy (Love of My Life for 54 years) also was a BA in psychology at the University of Arizona.

As far as . . . what you have heard . . . it breaks one's heart.

All persons deserve a life in dignity, freedom, safety, shelter, nourishment, where the person can explore her/his full humanity and spirit.

If there were only a way for all humans to live in love and safety with each other.

The events break one's heart!

Somehow I had not considered that sexualizing women is not just a perk, but a boost for some men's power, that misogyny is an empowering drug, not just a popular dodge. A sick culture of, by, and for men, is playing along, boosting predatory immaturity. So much for "sexual liberation"!

Rosemary Silva's avatar

Sexualizing women is a boost for some men's status as well as their power. That's why "eye-candy" women are included among the status symbols that some men collect: the luxury car, the Rolex, the mansion, the yacht, the Botoxed Barbie.

Right now, the United States of America is being led by predators, criminals and their enablers: Trump, Bondi, Hegeseth, Kennedy, Paula White (my god, an evangelical minister with vast reach), Jan6 convicted and pardoned criminals (Ed Martin)....Proud Boys, Oath Keepers (many of whom are likely working inside the government/ICE), Elana Habba, inside traders, Steve Bannon,. We have SCOTUS’s who accepted bribes, and one who was approved even after credible accusations of sexual assault. Oh god help us...the bench is so, so deep!

Susan Stone's avatar

Ruth, thank you for these articles. If you are an old enough teenager, you may be able to feel sorry for a trump or Berlusconi. But what needs to be brought out and made public is the trauma that these girls experience. If you are 13 or 14, and haven't been abused before, it would be terrifying. I can tell you from personal experience that the trauma does not just go away. It took me many, many years to recover from the years of abuse I experienced as a young child. And even if you are older than I was, you still experience trauma, and it does not just go away.

Gayle Donsky's avatar

Ruth, during tonight’s session, I would be interested in your thoughts about whether this “Epstein” story, which is motivating the excavation of a lot more information about Trump’s history of exploiting and abusing women will break through his teflon armor and finally bring him down.

Deborah solleveld's avatar

Unpleasant but necessary for us to know and be on watch for

Karina Epperlein's avatar

Yeah – thank you, Ruth! Uncomfortable and important!

"We must shed light on what they would like to keep silent, for that is how we honor the victims and hold the perpetrators accountable."

Interestingly, the press rather refuses to report on these semi-secret ongoings among the rich and powerful (fear of repercussions?). Many reporters cannot or dare not publish their findings. I read your strongmen book when it came out long time ago, and i could hardly fathom your research and accounts on Mussolini and Gaddafi. I am German and know all about Hitler. These sex crimes are very taboo and unimaginable things, belonging the realm of torture. It is the realm of secret fantasies. The sphere that many semi-ordinary men (and women) are drawn to as well! See the film business... "Sex Money Power" is the "empty" reason for their cruel disregard of the sanctity of all human beings. For me the great divide has been for a long time about humane vs in-humane... the other divides seem secondary labels. Decency and dignity – where are you?

When Gisèle Pelicot insisted on NOT staying anonymous, i was following her case intimately and felt so proud of her and also her French local supporters and the public in France. “I wanted all of society to be a witness,” she said. For me she is a heroine. "The shame is theirs, not ours."

I watched a Youtube video where Michael Wolfe was talking about how he spoke to a juror in the E.Jean Carroll case. Apparently they were creeped out by how Trump surrounded himself with young, and beautiful, women at the court each day,i.e. Natalie Harp, Alina Habba, and others. It was a factor in helping them to convict him.

Karina Epperlein's avatar

Good to hear!

Our culture of celebrity and fame is extremeley unhealthy – too seductive for young women. We need to protect them by creating/offering a different culture where we honor, highlight and praise ordinary "heroines" not just celebrities who have little substance and nothing meaningful to say. So we all can play a role here... right now our culture is very sick for the most part!

JazzPaw's avatar

The Trump, and Strongman phenomenon, baffles and disgusts me. We have arrived at a place where a supposedly law-abiding and moral nation has chosen a “leader” who openly embodies the exact opposite.

There is the underlying transactional nature of MAGA but also the underlying cruelty that organizes it. Most of the policies supported by MAGA involve denying rights, healthcare, food assistance, disaster relief, asylum and justice to as many as possible for the entertainment of the MAGA base. There is a deep moral failure on the US and the breadth of it is astounding.

Marycat2021's avatar

I agree, America needs to take a long, hard look at itself, and how it got here. All we seem to do is deny it, saying "this isn't who we are." Well, how did we come to this point if it's not "who we are"?

ML's avatar

Where is the link? It's not here.

Sharon Herrick's avatar

Now we will find out what MAGA and the "Manosphere" really care about. Do they really care about child abuse, sex trafficking, the horrific abuse of power that Epstein represents? Or will it, in the end, be OK if their Dear Leader does it? All those MAGA moms and dads out there---all those "pro-life," "pro-family," "upstanding pillars of their community"---will they still want to save sweet, innocent victims? Or will the victims now be blamed---as is so often the case.

It seems that the world is watching how our current government values the lives of its citizens of color: https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c3d135jz58zo . Some non-traditional commentators are making thoughtful observations: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RHXq2m5arkE and (extreme misogyny as the political template) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWReITvjJIc&list=TLPQMjAwNzIwMjWbn3HxqE0imw . So, Ms. Favors’ note about the general desire to disempower women in society may have some unfortunate currency in 2025 America.

ON REPEAT.

Where is Jill Stein?

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities."

- Voltaire

Out of the likely one thousand (or more) young trafficking victims of Epstein and his collaborators, some of them may have been quite close to Dolos: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTUJIYOFj4c . In fact, the Daily Beast, a newish online magazine, was early to this story (i.e. ten years ago): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xggo5DWV0DQ&list=TLPQMTcwNzIwMjWpkhJgrt0Sxw . When followers of a cult find their leader to be untruthful, things begin to break in a meaningful way (see Dr. Hassan, timestamp - 27:20): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDE5X5Sf8I4 .

Folks:

History is important. It should be cherished. This nation has a rich and complicated history.

SO, I BELIEVE HISTORY HAS ARRIVED AGAIN AS AN INFLECTION POINT FOR WHITE AMERICA. Dolos may have a unique historical antecedent that many Americans will likely not recognize (or even know about). This antecedent is one - David Curtis Stephenson originally from Texas and later Indiana. In the 1920s, he was the highly charismatic and politically powerful Grand Dragon of the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. Stephenson became one of the key players in the Second Klan (i.e. from 1915 to approximately 1944): https://beltmag.com/grand-dragon-dc-stephenson-kkk-indiana/ .

For the day, he had his own social media channel, a newspaper, that was highly influential amongst the citizenry. In addition, Stephenson was personally able to obtain a percentage of each Klan state membership along with possible money from ancillary items such as hoods and so on. Consequently, he became one of the wealthiest individuals in the state from preying on people’s emotions (i.e. extreme hate and resentments). Supposedly, Stephenson studied Mussolini before the guy from Germany became in vogue for hating non-White, non-Protestant peoples: https://nypost.com/2023/06/10/how-one-brave-woman-took-down-a-power-hungry-ku-klux-klan-leader/ .

More importantly, David Curtis Stephenson began to believe his own hype— especially after a number of Klan-inspired political victories (e.g. “I am the Law”). It has been my humble observation that racism and misogyny are opposite sides of the same coin (WARNING - Includes description of a sexual assault): https://www.wrtv.com/longform/madge-oberholtzer-the-murder-that-brought-down-the-ku-klux-klan . In spite of an outwardly pious image, Stephenson was known in certain circles for being somewhat of a sexual predator, with parties at his Indiana mansion that would surprise the late Jeffrey Epstein.

With this profile in mind, Stephenson “kidnapped”, “raped”, and caused the death of a young woman, Madge Oberholtzer, who met him only to save her job in Indiana’s Department of Education from facing extreme cutbacks by a new state government supported by the Klan. Sadly, it took about a month for Ms. Oberholtzer to succumb to her poisoning. Her death helped to move her state and eventually her nation away from a path of hate and darkness [Petty, A.F. (2020, August 21). The Fall of the Grand Dragon. The Belt Magazine. https://beltmag.com/grand-dragon-dc-stephenson-kkk-indiana/ ]:

“The death of Madge Oberholtzer shocked Indianapolis, and disgraced Stephenson. Though Stephenson was a racist and bigot of the most unrepentant sort, he was not brought down by those qualities, or by the actions that resulted from them. These were tolerated, even encouraged by Indiana society at every level, from the small towns to the state Senate. Rather, Stephenson was only disgraced when he violated that which American racism so frequently claims to defend: the virtue of white womanhood.”

With a basis in QAnon (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QAnon) and a firm belief that Democrats are pedophiles, is MAGA functionally the Third or Fourth … [fill in the blank]? Make America Great Again would take you back to what year? What is their problem with DEI? Why are many Republicans concerned about the “Great Replacement Theory”? So, always remember that the National Socialists actually used “Jim Crow” as a type of inspiration for their evil work (Bill Moyers was a national treasure): https://billmoyers.com/story/hitler-america-nazi-race-law/ . History is often inconvenient.

CARTHAGO DELENDA EST (via nonviolence).

P.S. : DEMOCRATIC officials keep mentioning (and showing) Jan. 6 and the PARDONS relative to the current “law and order” push by Dolos and his associates. This is a simple but strong contrast. Use social media to promote testimonies by former “January 6 Commission” members and witnesses. YES, re-litigate Jan. 6 - again and again and again. Dolos needs to realize that he lives in a GLASS HOUSE. Go on Faux News Channel because it is just like an “unrepresented” Republican district - i.e. plenty of visuals devoid of facts. The VISUAL EVIDENCE IS NOW ON YOUR SIDE. GO ON ESPN (a male-leaning channel) and express concern about the viability of the pending World Cup with actors like Dolos and Miller in the mix. With measles rampant and anti-vax officials influencing policy, will tourists want to visit the USA (weak ticket sales?): https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/soccer/heres-what-fifa-president-gianni-infantino-said-about-ice-cbp-agents-at-club-world-cup/ar-AA1GwUkA ?

P.P.S.: Do the following now! FIRST, TEACH CIVICS. Second, register voters. THIRD, TEACH CIVICS. Rinse. Repeat.

P.P.P.S.: Every local office of the Democratic Party and of the elected officials (including state representatives on up) must become a site for civic teach-ins and a clearing house for needed services (with Federal departments being sabotaged). The fact is that Democrats believe in the value of government and of government service, and the other side (i.e. the MAGAts and the illiberals) simply doesn’t. This engagement process will make registering partisan voters and teaching civics much easier.
