Correction to Essay and NYT Recs Strongmen

Jet lag takes its toll!

Excuse the double post but as many alert readers have pointed out there was a typo at the end of the essay. I meant to write: “Republicans have NOW accepted violence as a means of exercising power.” Jet lag and some last-minute editing created a typo of consequence. I have corrected it on the site.

While I am here I am pleased to report that today’s New York Times recommends Strongmen as one of “8 Great Books on the Decline of Democracy.” They list the 2020 edition, which predicted that Trump would not leave office quietly, but the 2021 paperback has a new epilogue on Jan. 6 and singles out Putin as a strongman who might become vulnerable.
